Zagreb Zoo – Wildlife in the Heart of the City

When a very modest zoological garden was opened inside Maksimir Park way back in 1925 with the arrival of three foxes and two owls, it was the first of its kind in Southeastern Europe. As years went by, it evolved and expanded, adapted to new times and grew into a modern institution with an international reputation. Even though its area is limited, more than 350 animal species live on seven hectares. Numerous interactive activities, educational programmes and special events throughout the year make both young and old visitors happy. A legend that you need to visit is definitely the Nile crocodile, the oldest inhabitant, living in the Tropical House since 1972.
